CHAPTER EIGHT

While Wade bought a prepackaged sandwich and some soda for himself for lunch, she filled her tank. He came out before she finished.

“See? I told you. She knows Jonah a lot better than me and even she agrees he isn’t the killing type.”

“I’m not saying you’re wrong,” she said. “I barely know any of these people. But someone killed Annabelle, and I found her in the Mitchells’ boarded up attic. The killer almost has to have been Jonah or his dad, and I don’t know why Mason Mitchell would kill his son’s girlfriend.”

“Well, how about we go talk to that other guy she mentioned? Maybe he still lives near them.”

“He does,” Flora said with a sigh. “I met him yesterday. He lives right across the street. I didn’t get any creepy vibes from him, but I only met him the once.”

“So, let’s go chat with him,” Wade said. “To me, it sounds like he’s the most likely suspect.”

She pressed her lips together. It was true that the house had been sitting empty for years, and she knew there had been at least a few break-ins. It was possible Wyatt had hidden her body there after the Mitchells moved out… or maybe even while they were living there, if they went out of town and he knew where their key was hidden.

“I’m not sure,” she said as she returned the nozzle to the pump and screwed her gas cap on. “I might not be planning on living at that house, but I’m still going to see an awful lot of Wyatt and his wife. I don’t want to get off on the wrong foot with them. And if you’re right, and he’s behind this, he might decide you and I should be his next victims. I don’t want to have to look over my shoulder every time I’m at the house.”

“Aren’t you going to be looking over your shoulder anyway?” Wade asked. “The way I see it is you and I are both already involved in this. It might have been a while since I worked for Mr. Morgan, but I remember everything about her disappearance, especially those first few weeks. I always hoped she’d be found, and now that she has been, I want to know exactly what happened to her. I thought you of all people would understand that. You’re always getting involved in little mysteries, and you helped me before, back when I first got back to town.”

“I do understand,” she told him. “And you’re right that I’m going to be looking over my shoulder until this is solved either way. I’ll go with you to talk to Wyatt, but let me do the talking again, all right? Don’t accuse him of anything. I really don’t want to start off on the wrong foot with this guy.”

“Hey, I won’t say a word if you don’t want me to. Do you want to drive together? My car is kind of a beater.”

“Yeah, hop in,” Flora said.

She had driven
